TVs and films have been portraying AI (Artificial Intelligence) as one of the most powerful inventions humans created that, in some, have surpassed the power of the internet and the power of natural intelligence. There are many variations in the mainstream media of what AI is about over the years. But in real life, AI seems to be still in its early stage and probably has a long way to go before it could reach its full potential just like what we could see on screen.
It was in the 1950s when ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was first adopted. This was coined by American computer scientist John McCarthy during the Dartmouth Conference in 1956. From then on, AI has flourished and continues to be more accessible for many to use it and find breakthroughs.
On the other hand, as many people do their best to further revolutionize the potential of AI, there are fears that were also born from the minds of other individuals who think that it could bring harm to us, humans.
In this blog, we will share with you some of the most infamous myths regarding artificial intelligence that, in reality, should not be feared.
Myth #1: AI Is Going To Take Away Jobs From Humans
Reality: AI Change Existing Jobs For Good Reasons
It is true that Artificial Intelligence was meant for a technological revolution. However, it doesn’t mean that it would take away jobs from humans. But instead, it should change existing and repetitive jobs that we have today in order to create better ones.
For example, there are jobs and industries where the demand for work is too heavy and the labor is too much for humans. These jobs are sometimes repetitive and/or require continuous working hours to be able to meet deadlines.
With the use of AI, these kinds of jobs could be transitioned to machines that can handle the higher and heavier demands of workloads. But if you’re wondering where people would come in the situation, it would be that people can do the smarter form of work which is by controlling these machines to ensure fast but reliable workflow.
Myth #2 AI Is Smarter Than Human
Reality: AI Is Designed By Humans And Only Humans Can Program It
There’s no artificial intelligence without people. It is us, the people, who create, program, and control the information and algorithms made up by AI. Without us, generally speaking, an AI has its limit to function compared to the way we do. Although it is meant to learn new things, its learning process is not natural like ours. It can be smarter than someone, but it cannot exceed the intelligence of all the people altogether and the decision-making we do in case of unforeseen circumstances. This is because we can always adjust faster and cope with situations in a shorter period of time. While AI is nowhere near to adapting instant learning as we do.
Myth #3 AI Can Make Medical Decisions and Diagnoses
Reality: The Final Decisions When It Comes To Medical Diagnoses Would Always Be On The Medical Experts
Although there are advanced medical types of equipment used to be able to determine illness and make diagnoses, it won’t be possible without the people who invented and created it. AI is just meant to make the process faster (i.e. CT scan, MRI, X-Ray) when it comes to making thorough checkups to avoid misdiagnoses.
Myth #4 AI Will Lead To Human Enslavement
Reality: People Would Not Launch A New Technology That Could Overpower Us
Although we, humans, are aiming for further technological advancement to make our everyday living much easier, there’s no way that we would want someone to rule over us, especially a non-living thing. Contrary to many films that portrayed AI technology as something that could overpower the human race, in reality, it has no potential to do it to us. It won’t function without our commands.
The human brain is complex and up to this day still has many unknown secrets waiting to be unraveled. This can be the primary reason why with AI, it is not possible to make it super-intelligent than us. It cannot exactly replicate natural intelligence. But is there a possibility for AI to further innovate? Yes, obviously, but if you are thinking of it as being just like in the movies… that is something too much to think about right now. That’s why those movies are called science-fiction after all.
Thus, you should be reminded of the meaning of AI which is Artificial Intelligence whereas it is not natural as how our intelligence works.
The Bottom Line
AI technology has a bright future ahead of us. There is a high possibility for more breakthroughs and revolutionized innovations to happen in the future. But one thing is for sure, AI technology would not continue to exist and be further enhanced without us, the people. The fear about AI should be debunked as most of these fears are based on fantasy and science-fiction rather than reality.
Therefore, you should not believe the myths but believe in the positive contribution of AI itself to society as it is meant for progression. Digital workers are already existing, but that doesn’t mean removing jobs from the people. It exists for the reason that people can work smarter by controlling and enhancing this type of technology.
